An Evening with Dabbawala

Its first NHRD meeting we attended, It was amazing.

Networking with NHRD members over  Classic Tamilnadu Pongal and Wadai  was  cool. Coffee was awesome at Savera.

imageThe speaker of the night, Dubbawala Network director Manish Tripathi, was certainly the most entertaining!

He entered the hall with legendary Dabba in his hand.

Right from the word go, Manish had the attendees laughing with his quick one liners  about how one of the most unique and well run companies actually works!

After a brief background on how the company first started back in 1890 (He repeated thrice !!), his first rule for success was to make your employees shareholders in the business. He explained that by making the employees partners, they are more committed to the work and that is the reason why, in over 100 years of business, the employers have never been on strike! He added that in addition to this, you need a strong customer base.

He said that the educated MBAs are tough to manage so don't employ people who are over qualified for the job. He drew a lot of laughs from us when he said, "If there is an illiterate dubbawalla and a Harvard graduate sitting in front of me and I ask them to deliver a tiffin, the dubbawalla will be out of the door before I even finish. Meanwhile, the Harvard MBA will sit there and want to know the whole process before he will go and do something."

Having generated the most excitement, Manish finished to a standing ovation(actually we stood twice) and was immediately surrounded by NHRD members hungry to meet the man himself.

To be precise It was great meeting with a proud Maratha.!!!
